How to Join Indian Army as an Officer

The thought of making a career in the army conjures dreams of Sacrifice, Valour, Swag, Parties and a feeling of contentment. Now let us discuss how to join Indian Army. Are the exams a tough nut to crack or a cakewalk. It depends whether a person wants to continue in the army until he retires or for a short period.

Army has two divisions

  1. Permanent Service Commission
  2. Short Service Commission.

Permanent Service Commission

The person works in the army until he retires. To get into Permanent Service Commission the candidate will have to train in the National Defence Academy(N.D.A) Pune or Indian Military Academy(I.M.A)Dehradun or Officers Training Academy(O.T.A) Gaya.


A candidate can take the exam while studying in class 12 and after passing plus two exams. The exam is a common exam to join Indian Army, Air Force and Navy as per option. The exam is conducted by the U.P.S.C twice a year and it involves clearing the written U.P.S.C exam, a 5- day Services Selection Board interview and the Medical Board. The Written exam consists of Mathematics, General Ability and General Knowledge. It is an exam which tests the candidate’s overall knowledge of basic subjects. It is a 3year course after completing this course the army cadets are sent to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. They are given a strenuous military training for a year and on completion of the course, they become permanent commissioned officers. During the training in I.M.A the cadets receive 21,ooo stipend and best infrastructure to develop their interests.


The I.M.A trains the candidates to lead and fight at the front. The cadets are given training in combat and tactics using modern technology and tools. The I.M.A believes in overall development of a cadet and on passing out he is a permanent commissioned officer. He gets the rank of LIEUTENANT.Join Indian Army

The ways to get into I.M.A are-


The exam can be taken in the final year of graduation or after graduation. The candidates have to clear the S.S.B interview and the medical fitness and can directly join the I.M.A. The exam conducted by the U.P.S.C consists of English, General Knowledge and Elementary Maths. Selected candidates undergo rigorous training for 18 months.

The other entries are by not appearing for the U.P.S.C exam but by direct entry. They are only by clearing the S.S.B interview and medical.


This is for Students in their Pre-Final Year Engineering. Selected candidates are trained for 1 year in the I.M.A. They are given a short service commission.


Final year students, BE or B.Tech graduates can join the I.M.A. through this course. They will get a short service commission on probation and will be given the rank of LIEUTENANT. After completion of 1 year, they will get a permanent service commission and will be liable to serve in any part of the world as decided by the army headquarters.


Post Graduates in any discipline are eligible for this entry. Selected candidates get short service commission on probation in the rank of LIEUTENANT. On completion of 1 year in the academy, they will be given permanent service commission.

10+2 (TES) ENTRY:

Candidates can apply after passing class 12 with an aggregate of 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. They have to clear S.S.B and then join TES for a period of 5 years.
It will consist of Basic Military Training in O.T.A, Gaya for 1 year

Technical Training in two phases-

Pre Commission Training-3years

Post Commission Training-1year

They will get an Engineering Degree and become commissioned officers after completion of 4 years.


People can serve for 10-14 years too. Women can also apply for short service commission. Short service commission can be through N.C.C and J.A.G too.
